Leicester’s Mini WE Day – Anti Bullying

I was really pleased to be able to attend the Mini WE Day event organised by and for young people in Leicester. The theme was anti bullying and there were young people from across the country present. The Leicester event held at the Y Theatre on 28th June was inspired by the Big Stop campaign and the international WE campaign.

The Big Stop Campaign is a non profit organization which is ran by Young People in Leicester. Their aim is not just to tackle Bullying but to encourage Young People to take more community action to make their Communities a better place. Their new pledge called “Time for change” wants to open a Big Stop Programme in most cities to educate Young people. The Big Stop Campaign is the Growing Network of Young People who want a change.

WE Day is part of a family of organizations, including Free The Children and Me to We, that has a shared goal: to empower a generation to shift the world from ‘me’ to ‘we’—through how we act, how we give, the choices we make on what to buy and what to wear, the media we consume and the experiences with which we choose to engage.

Leicester’s event was organised by Ryanvir Singh and his colleagues on the Young People’s Council. I was pleased to be able to speak at the event and talked about meeting Nelson Mandela and what an inspiring example he was of leadership built on hope for the future and not settling the scores of the past.  We were also able to support the event with funds from the Rushey Mead Ward community budget.

Well done Ryanvir and all the other young people for organising such a good event.
