I had the great pleasure at the weekend of welcoming some of the first new tenants into our new council housing. Working in partnership with the Labour Government we were able to start building Council Houses for the first time in 35 years. One of the biggest social issues that faces Leicester is the shortage of affordable family housing. I was delighted when our submission to build 146 was agreed. Its a great start and tenants are already moving into the first 9. I am grateful to my cabinet colleagues for supporting this initiative.
I want to see much more council housing like this developed in our city. They are envronmentally friendly with solar panels and high spec insulation. It will be a priority for me as Mayor.
I spent time in the afternoon meeting labour Party members with Sundip Meghani one of our candidates in Beamont leys.
we were warmly welcomed and it was great to meet so many people.
There was concern about the cuts and potential museum closures, as well as the threat to care and Repair. I agreed to take their views to the Labour Group.
